Who needs toys?

Feb 22, 2026

After watching a lot of winter Olympics these last couple of weeks my kids have been captivated by the slopestyle skiing.

So much so that they crafted themselves their own kit, including cardboard skis 😂

and have proceeded to spend the last week 'skiing' round the house!

It doesn't just stop there though - there's been lots of detailed questions.

Questions, I'll be honest, I often don't know the answer to - including how the scoring works in curling 🤷!  We only watch most of these sports every 4 years and what I have gleaned by the end of the two weeks has probably been long forgotten by the next event!

It did hammer home to me, once again, that for young children

real life is the gold!

Who needs toys when you can make yourself a pair of cardboard skis?!

Real life is endlessly fascinating.

They don't just watch, they study it.

It's the same with Joe and vehicles.

He tracks them, he waits for them, he wants the real details.

Most picture books are made up or simplified.

But vehicle-obsessed kids crave more.

That's the commitment we have made in the 'Where Are You Going Today?' books.  We show what the vehicles really do, written as a story (not just a collection of facts), with

beautiful true-to-life pictures.

Stories that respect their curiosity.

And when something captures them, what you notice is that they slow down, they focus and they ask great questions!

Have a good week!

Rachel
